How Does Acupuncture Work?

I think I will always be amazed by how well acupuncture works for so many different health problems.  There is no one-answer to the big question, "How does acupuncture work" though there are many studies trying to figure it out.  Essentially, acupuncture helps center a person, move Qi from areas of excess (knots in your muscles, areas that are painful or uncomfortable), and bring that vital energy to where it is needed.  It rebalances your system.  It reminds the body of what it feels like to be relaxed.  After a few weekly treatments, you will feel less stressed out because acupuncture stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest and digest" system in which we are supposed to be living.  We live hectic lives, and always have a "to do" running through our minds.  Acupuncture signals pathways that remind us how to let it go and just "be" for a while.  This is the state where healing happens.

Why Take Chinese Herbs

Please note: Chinese herbs are powerful and should only be taken when prescribed by a qualified practitioner.  For best results, find a practitioner that is Board Certified in Chinese Herbal Medicine.  He or she is called a Diplomate of Oriental Medicine on nccaom.org.
Chinese Herbs are AMAZING!  Imagine having a pharmacist combine all of your medications into one pill that addresses all your needs, without side effects?  That is what Chinese herbalists, throughout the past millennia, have learned to do.
Chinese herbs come in many forms.  It is rare to take one herb by itself.  By combining 5-10 herbs, formulas are created to address a very specific problem, and side effects are avoided (when prescribed correctly) because the herbs balance each other and are used whole (individual chemicals are not extracted and concentrated).  These formulas are often given in pill form, which has the advantage of convenience, affordability, and lack of flavor.  While this may be exactly what you need, a skilled practitioner will gladly go a step further and make you a custom formula.  With knowledge of the actions of hundreds of herbs, she will choose the ones that will work together to address the exact symptoms you are experiencing, and will usually also address the root of the problem to prevent re-occurrence.  These are usually given in powder form, which you mix with hot water and drink.
